Problem
A rectangle with perimeter
is divided into five congruent rectangles as shown in the diagram. What is the perimeter of one of the five congruent rectangles?
Solution
Let
represent the length of one of the smaller rectangles, and let
represent the width of one of the smaller rectangles, with

From the large rectangle, we see that the top has length
